Capability and Oppression

The capability approach focuses on understanding and removing unfreedom, so it is surprising that connections between oppression have been little discussed. I take seven steps towards filling void. (1) There an intuitive conceptual connection if we understand “oppression” as being held or confined to low levels. (2) Normatively, noteworthy oppressed people are at levels a result of the agency others, even (as in systemic structural oppression) this effect not always intended. (3) Capability research can contribute explaining oppression, including (4) only allows but invites inquiry into what distinctive about specific forms oppression. (5) Why these unfreedoms pervasive persistent requires deeper explanations, which foundations: one group contributes causally reducing freedom whether reduction anyone’s purpose not.
